Natural Treatments for Prostate Cancer

Perhaps the best natural treatments for prostate cancer comes in the form of prevention. In addition to contributing to your overall health, there is evidence that a balanced diet can help prevent prostate cancer. It's familiar advice, but limiting fats and increasing your intake of fresh, green vegetables, whole grains and fish may help protect you.

In the same vein, while obesity is believed to be a factor in developing prostate cancer, the results are not conclusive, still healthy nutrition and regular exercise can only increase your well being. Furthermore, science suggests that excess weight may affect levels of hormones associated with increased risk of prostate cancer.

Medical researchers also support the use of plants, vitamins and minerals to decrease the risk of prostate cancer. While, again, the benefits aren't proven, a few key plant-based chemicals, called phytoestrogens, which are found in soybeans and other legumes may stave off prostate cancer. Tomatoes are revered in cancer treatments for their lycopene content and antioxidant effects. (Lycopene is also heavily concentrated in pink grapefruit, watermelons and guava fruit, which is native to Mexico and South America, but widely available most everywhere.)

Saw Palmetto, which can be found in nearly every grocery or drug store, is touted as an effective herbal treatment for the prostate because it prevents the body from producing the chemical DHT, thus decreasing prostate swelling and enlargement.

In terms of supplements, it's widely believed that selenium, vitamin E and zinc, alone or in combination, may increase resistance to prostate cancer. While these treatments are heavily praised for their effectiveness in preventing prostate cancer, they are suggested for use after diagnosis, as well.
